Each year, AFO hosts the film competition. Our dramaturgy team selects the best out of the thousands submitted films and these will make it to the festival screens and reach the festival audience. The winner will also receive EUR 2000.
Academia Film Olomouc presents the opportunity to apply for the AFO 54 Festival Competition. You may submit any popular science documentary completed in 2017 and 2018. The extended deadline for applications is on 31 January 2019. We are very flexible as far as the genre, subject, audio-visual form or content are concerned. Therefore, we do not impose any boundaries on filmmakers and keep our dramaturgy open to a wide variety of films, ranging from feature science documentaries, wildlife productions, TV films, to short or online formats.
To be considered a science documentary by us at Academia Film Olomouc, a film must present the results of systematic observation and exploration of the world within us and around us. We also count in films focusing on scientists as extraordinary professionals or outstanding personalities. Likewise, we consider it legitimate to put in the spotlight science as such: science as an institution, an inherent part of society, with all the dilemmas and complexities related to the ethics, methods and applications.
There are three competition categories:
- Best International Science Documentary Film
- Best Czech & Slovak Science Documentary Film
- Best Science Documentary Short Film
The AFO Festival in Olomouc has been held since 1966 and has transformed from a purely Czech event into an important European event in the area of science documentaries. The films which will be selected for the competition will be seen by thousands of spectators during the festival week. The competition winner will also receive a prize of EUR 2000. You may submit your film using Filmfreeway where you will also find other important information.
