|Category||culture and art history literature philosophy|
The experience of warfare and battles was the bread and butter for citizens of the ancient Greek polis. No wonder war was a crucial theme for ancient Greek oral tradition, culture, literature and drama. The epics, such as The Iliad or The Odyssey, fulfil a paradigmatic role when we look into the causes and nature of war, its course and consequences. The ancient Athenian tragedy inspired mostly by epics very often thematises war and related issues. The lecture focuses on how the theme of war in epics and tragedies works today. As a result of the original work of the American psychiatrist Jonathan Shaye, tragedy is used in therapy of war veterans who suffer from PTSD. Tragedy is used as a medium of communication of suffering and catharsis.
