Marie Tomanová’s Young American celebrates an idea of an “America” still rife with dreams and possibilities, hope, and freedom. The portraits taken between 2015 and 2018 in New York City visualise an America in which individuality is valued as uniqueness and not judged as a lack of sameness. Young American points not only to youth empowerment and the potent voice and presence that has emerged with it but also to welcome the disintegration of any sort of set idea about identity. Author’s first monograph Young American, with an introduction by Ryan McGinley, was published in March 2019 by Paradigm Publishing. A feature-length documentary film on Tomanová is currently underway and directed by the Student Academy Award-winning director Marie Dvořáková and will be released in 2020.
