James Cameron’s Science Fiction epic Avatar (2009) provides a terrifying vision of a future in which Earth’s biosphere has largely been destroyed, replaying the history of Western colonialism and of fossil fuel-driven industrialisation. The film broke global box office records and generated a considerable amount of academic research demonstrating that it did not only reach more people around the world than almost any other film in history but touched many of them very deeply. In addition to giving rise to a lively fan culture, the film was appropriated by indigenous rights and environmentalist groups for their political activities. This talk examines both the film itself and its worldwide impact.
