In many senses, Ancient Greece stands at the beginning of “Western Music” – with the first writings on music theory, acoustics, the physics of instruments, and attempts at writing histories of music that have been informing Western thought up until the present. But what was the music of the Ancient Greeks like? Was it even “Western” as opposed to the music of the Near East? Stefan Hagel works as a philologist and music-archaeologist at the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In this talk he will discuss such questions, illustrating the evidence by sounding reconstructed instruments and two millennia old melodies.
