Is the universe still the empty and unconquerable space we know from films? Or are we, blinded by desire for a rapid Internet and colonizing cosmos, hoarding space trash in our orbit? Earth’s orbit is flooded with a great deal of cosmic trash, shards of man-made satellites and other bodies that have become an astronaut’s nightmare. In recent decades, more than 6500 satellites have been released into space and only 900 of them are still functional to this day. Cosmic trash, in the form of wreckage, is becoming an increasingly current theme of discussion, especially for astronauts, for whom space is once again a little more unsafe than before. How serious is the situation above our heads?
