Beer Culture

Beer is not only a drink, but also a deeply rooted symbol of Czech national identity. Its importance goes beyond mere consumption – it influences culture, social norms and the economy. Beer is a product that has accompanied human history since the invention of trade and the development of agriculture.

The Beer Culture section explores this drink as a chemical experiment, a cultural and social phenomenon, and a mirror of gender, ethnic and national identities. The section will feature three unique screenings: the archival magazine Retro: PIVO, which traces the role of beer and the beer industry in Czechoslovakia; the documentary Czech Beer War, about the current challenges and conflicts in the brewing industry; and the American independent film One Pint at a Time, which tells the stories of small African American breweries and their creators. Join us to explore the world of beer from unconventional angles – as a beverage that bridges science, tradition and society.
