60

Let’s celebrate the 60th anniversary of the festival with a curated selection of documentaries from each decade of its history, enhanced with elements of dramatization and living history. Drawing from our extensive archives and period records, we aim to reveal how the audiovisual representation of science has evolved from the very first year of the festival to the present day.

The 60 Section is based on more than a year of research in the University’s archives and cooperation with the Czech Television and National Film Archives. This extensive work has allowed us to document the nature of the films screened over the years, and compile screening bands that highlight key milestones in the evolution of our central genre. An important roadmap to the section is a book dedicated to the history of the AFO festival and its role in popular science cinema. Our anniversary is not just a celebration of the past but also an opportunity to reflect on the genre’s transformation and its ongoing relationship with science and education. The programme includes the AFO Videoforum, which uses period technology to screen archival films from the 80s and 90s.
