Programme sections AFO 61

The theme of AFO 61 is Common ground. It is an intersection of values and opinions that benefits all parties involved, a foundation on which we can build. However, common ground is not a matter of course – it is a conscious decision to listen, explore ideas and cross boundaries. In a time of multiple crises and fragmented communication, we must ask ourselves: What does it mean to reach common ground? Where can we find it, and where is it unreachable?

Competition sections

The competition sections focus on science documentaries across audiovisual media. Individual selections strive to showcase the current state of science-themed films, emphasising clarity and innovative form. Expert juries composed of filmmakers, scientists and journalists decided on the winners. We also present awards for communication of science, original work and best debut, as well as the Audience Award and the Student Jury Award. Award-winning films are screened on the last day of the festival.

Thematic sections

Thematic sections develop the overarching theme of the festival. They focus on current trends and contemporary social and scientific topics. Each section has its own story and message throughout the festival. They are prepared by two-person programming teams selecting the best films from the prestigious European and international production. The programme includes lectures by leading scientists, as well as exhibitions, theatre performances, concerts and thematic walks.
