Karel Veselý

Music journalist, writer and, since autumn 2023, head of the culture section of Deník Alarm

He graduated from the Faculty of Arts at Masaryk University and has worked as a freelance journalist since 2008. He writes about popular music in cultural and social contexts. He has worked at, among others, ČRo – Radio Wave, Full Moon and Aktuálně.cz. He is the author of the non-fiction books Hudba ohně (2010), Planeta Nippon (with Anna Křivánková and Antonín Tesař) (2018), Všechny kočky jsou šedé (with Miloš Hroch) (2020) and Hudba srdce (2024). He has received two Magnesia Litera nominations. He has written the novels BombaFunk (2018) and Kov (2022). He co-wrote the screenplay for the Czech Television documentary series Rapstory (2022) and created the podcast series Anatomie lovesongu (2024) for ČRo – Radio Wave. He regularly records the podcasts Rapspot and Soundsystém. He is a member of the jury of the Vinyla music awards and in 2025 was part of the jury of the 9th edition of the Věra Jirousová Award.
