Johannes Grenzfurthner

Austrian filmmaker, artist, author, curator, performer, actor, and lecturer

He is the founder and artistic director of monochrom, an international art, theory, and film collective based in Vienna’s MuseumsQuartier, known for interdisciplinary projects at the intersection of art, technology, pop culture, and political theory. Grenzfurthner’s films move between genre cinema, art film, and essayistic documentary, often exploring technology, ideology, and subculture. ORF critic Christian Fuchs has described him as an important representative of the Austrian New Wave. His work has screened at numerous international festivals. He has taught at institutions including the University of Applied Arts Vienna, FH Joanneum University of Applied Sciences, and Leuphana University Lüneburg. He is also the director of Arse Elektronika in San Francisco, a festival dedicated to the relationship between sexuality and technology, and a co-organizer of Roboexotica, Vienna’s festival of cocktail robotics.
