Festival Tips #4: The Best Treats of Friday’s AFO Programme

26. 4. 2024

The second half of Academia Film Olomouc continues full speed ahead with an overwhelming programme of unique events you won’t see anywhere else. As always, here are our tips on what not to miss!

The first film screened in the Metropol Cinema is an absolute smash. Come at 10:30 a.m. to watch Historical Countryside of Jeseniky in 3D, a unique film competing in the Czech & Slovak Competition. It uses restored photographs and voiceover recorded by one of the locals to reminisce over the region of Jeseniky from the turn of the 19th and 20th century, while the 3D form takes it to the next level. If you’ve followed our Wednesday tip to watch the Czech TV series Czechs on Drugs, then be sure to complement it with a lecture by its director, Ivo Bystřičan, entitled Even Drugs Are Science. Even if you haven’t watched the series, you’ll be inspired by his case study at 1 p.m. in the Corpus Christi Chapel.

Back at the Metropol Cinema at 2:30 p.m., you’ll have a chance to see The Universe in a Grain of Sand, connecting the worlds of art and science. The film explores how they influence each other through an innovative lens full of animations and inspirational associations. At 5:30 p.m., the Corpus Christi Chapel will host an interactive lecture by neuroscientist Hannah Critchlow on Joined up Thinking. Her session will explore the possibilities of collective intelligence and show the power of joining the intelligence and knowledge of several individuals.

The Resilience programme section will showcase another thematic screening at 8 p.m. at the Theatre Hall. This bold panel with a provocative title How the F&%K Did We Get Here and What the F&*K Do We Do About It? will join academics, activists and intellectuals who are trying to figure out how we managed to get into the environmental crisis we face today and what can be done about it. The evening once again belongs to Music is Science! Let’s begin with a rap session at 9 p.m. with Gondor Flames and continue the genre with Laokoon. What follows is a DJ set of Marie Pravda and others. Enjoy the ride!
