Like a Virgin

Nevinnost, panenství, neposkvrněnost. Výrazy pro ženy před zahájením sexuálního života akcentují čistotu jako ctnost a jejich nejvyšší hodnotu. Co je ale na mýtu panenství pravdy z pohledu vědy?
Film se obrací na lékařky, socioložky či antropoložky a pátrá, kde se mýtus panenství vzal, zda jej lze na těle skutečně ověřit a jaké má společenské přesahy a morální implikace. Jeho idolizace totiž zdaleka není na ústupu a objevuje se v kulturách po celém světě. Absence sexuální zkušenosti, sama nejasně definovatelná, mnohdy určuje ženinu hodnotu ve společnosti i čest její rodiny, občas je však i předmětem svobodné volby. S panenstvím se tak pojí mnoho významů, úzkostí a očekávání – ale existuje i fyzicky?

Innocence, virginity, chastity. Terms used to describe sexually non-active women emphasise purity as a virtue and their highest value. But is there any truth to the myth of virginity from the scientific perspective?
The film approaches female doctors, sociologists, and anthropologists to investigate the origins of the virginity myth, whether it can be verified on the body, and what its social overlaps and moral implications are. Its idolisation is far from declining and is part of cultures worldwide. The absence of sexual experience, itself vaguely definable, often defines a woman’s value in society and her family’s honor, but it can also be a matter of free choice. There are so many meanings, anxieties, and expectations attached to virginity—but does it also exist physically?
